Adapted from the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, this heartfelt film brings together a unique cast. Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) is a young white girl haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father, Lily flees with Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson), her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. The one memento she has of her mother is a label for a bee farm – in Southern Carolina. When she finds the home, she is taken in by August Boatwright (Queen Latifa) who remembers her mother. But is she safe – even with the bees – from her angry, physically violent father, who is searching for her?
Sisters June and May Boatwright, portrayed by Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo, add dimension to the story. And the bee keeping scenes are really quite absorbing.
A great chick flick.
